Worship Spotlight 12 28 09


2010 is upon us. What hopes do you have for this New Year? The age old resolution: “I’m going to get into shape” (which we all know means eating healthier and exercising more.) Or perhaps you plan on taking control of your finances; spending more quality time with your family; making new friends or reconnecting with old ones; and the list goes on and on. Yet, it seems to be the same list year after year, doesn’t it?

This year I’m going to try to read my Bible more. Let me restate that in a less intimidating way, “TODAY I’m going to read my Bible.” And tomorrow, I plan on doing the same. I’m sure there will be days that my busyness crowds out the time I plan to set aside to read God’s Word, but the next day I am determined that I will start over. And at the end of ‘10, I hope to have done better than I have before.

You see, I desire a closer relationship with my Lord and Savior. The best way to get to know Him more intimately is to spend time reading the love letters He’s written to me. It’s how I will come to appreciate the nuances of his character; how I will learn to see His hand in my life and the lives of others; how I will know what He requires of me – what He desires from me – what He plans for me. You see, it’s difficult to worship what you do not know.

There are many tools around to help you read through the Bible in a year. A couple years ago Mark challenged us to do just that and he provided us with a reading chart to accomplish it. I started out strong but fell behind and became discouraged. This year I’ll start again and I hope you will join me.

I’ve decided to use the “One Year Chronological Bible NLT” (available at www.christianbook.com or any Christian book store.)This Bible is divided into 15 minutes of reading for each day. This Bible places events in the order in which they happened rather than in book order as usual. There are also online Bible guides available to help you. Look through your Bible, it may have a chart listed for you already. Open up your Bible, God has something to share with you today.

Christmas Worship Spotlight 12 14 09

We are fast approaching Christmas Day. Have you taken time as a family to acknowledge what it’s all about? We’ve decorated, baked, purchased gifts, sent cards, attended parties…. now let’s spend some time during the next couple of weeks preparing our hearts to celebrate the coming of the Christ Child. Let’s make our homes a place where the true meaning of Christmas is celebrated.

Here are some Bible readings/videos that you can do together at home after supper or before bed each night. Several of these suggestions are prophecies about the Messiah’s coming, written hundreds of years before that miraculous night. Revel in the complexity of God’s plan – of His timing. If you don’t have access to the internet, put on a Christmas CD as you do your readings and really listen to the message in those familiar songs. Take some time to Be Still and Know that He is God!

The True Meaning of Christmas by Joyce Schafer


I love Christmas. I love the shopping, the baking, the decorations, the music, the school programs, the parties, and especially our Christmas Eve family gathering.

It is so easy to get caught up in the season and forget the true meaning of Christmas. We are celebrating the birth of Jesus. We all know the story about Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem and Jesus being born in a stable. How does Jesus being born so many years ago affect mankind today? He was born and later died so that our sins could be forgiven. Our age, our circumstances or how many sins we have committed in the past does not matter. Jesus was born and died for us.

God wants to be Our Father and he wants to give us the gift of Eternal Life. What better time than Christmas to make this happen?

Lavished by Susan Shull

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are.” I John 3:1

I stand amazed when I consider the love of my Heavenly Father! To think that he “lavishes” his love on me! It makes me feel all warm and cuddly and I want more of it. The scriptures are full of verses about the love our Savior has for us. The concordance in my Bible has 8 columns! of tiny print listing verses that contain some form of the word “love”. These verses are metaphorical hugs from the Creator of the universe to us.

Evidence of God’s love for us is all around. He created the beauty of this earth, the animals, birds, flowers, plants, and music for us-a perfect world. Then man messed up by rejecting God. That rejection resulted in death and decay in the world.

Thank goodness God didn’t stop showing his love there. His plan for us continued throughout history. The Old Testament prophets proclaimed that a Savior would be born-Moses, 1500 years before Christ; David-1000 years before; Isaiah-700 years before; Malachi-400 years before Christ. Isn’t it comforting to know that God, the omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent God, is in charge?

When that promised Messiah came as a sweet, tiny, baby boy, God had given us his best and most perfect gift. Our Savior loved us so much he came to the fallen earth and lived an ordinary life that ended in an extraordinary way. He experienced everything we do: the unconditional love of his parents, childhood, the teen years, friendship, pain rejection, temptation, suffering, death, but praise God, he did it without sin, gave His life to cover ours, and rose from the dead.

His ways are so far above mine! His love is indescribable. I think He knew we wouldn’t be able to come up with words to express our wonder and marvel at His greatness, so he gave us the Psalms, including this one smack dab in the middle of the Bible.

“Praise the Lord, all you nations, extol him all you peoples, for great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!”

Ornaments hung with loving care.
Delicate hues of handblown glass
...Keepsakes from the past.
A display of dazzling lights,
To warm the heart on wintery nights.

Glitter and glue and rubber bands.

The Gift of a Kind Deed by Glenna Shryock


Several years ago, I had a fracture in my back. After yet another trip to the doctor in Terre Haute to check my extremely slow healing process, I stopped at Wal-Mart to purchase groceries and dog food. My back was hurting from being on my feet and pushing the cart. My spirits were low as I didn’t seem to be making any progress with recovery. As I approached my car, I wondered how much more my back would hurt after loading the dog food into the trunk. At that moment, a man with only one arm walked up, grabbed the dog food bag and placed it in my trunk. I was stunned! I finally recovered enough to quickly thank him as he walked away.

My heavenly Father knew my need. He sent an earthly “angel” who reminded me that we are all capable of showing His love to someone else, no matter our own personal situation.

2 Corinthians 1: 3-4: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

The Call of a Lifetime by Vaneta Andrews


On December 10, 1991 Tim received the call of a lifetime – the transplant call.

Tim’s journey began in June 1985 when he was diagnosed with kidney failure at the age of 24. He would spend the next 6 ½ years on kidney dialysis. Kidney dialysis meant spending 3 days a week – 4 hours a day hooked to a machine that took blood out of the body, filtered it and put it back in. This was a grueling day. So many do’s and don’ts to live by – can you imagine no chocolate for 6 ½ years?

As with many transplants, Tim’s was a cadaver transplant – meaning someone had to die for Tim to live. We don’t know a lot about the person Tim received the kidney from – he was a 21 year old male killed in a motorcycle accident. It’s the same for all of us – someone had to die so that we might live except we know a lot about the person who died for us and it was no accident! That someone was Jesus.

We can’t celebrate Jesus’ birth without thinking of His sacrifice as well. Jesus said “I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.” John 10:10. In order for us to have life more abundantly that meant Jesus would have to die a grueling death on the cross. He would have to shed His blood for us. Jesus knew he would have to die for us and yet he offered to be that sacrifice.

Tim never lost hope, never lost sight of the prize. He didn’t hesitate to answer the call and we shouldn’t either. God is calling each one of us to something. To eternal life if you don’t already have it, to service if you aren’t serving, to sharing your faith if you aren’t sharing. Please don’t hesitate to answer the Call of a Lifetime!

I Remember by Lori Smith


I’ve loved Christmas ever since I can remember. What child doesn’t? I loved the traditions and always wanted each Christmas to be just like the last. I remember spending Christmas Eve cleaning the house for Santa because Mom said he wouldn’t leave presents at a messy house. Clever, wasn’t she? I remember my Dad sneaking in that last minute gift for my Mom and always asking one of us girls to wrap it. I remember our family friends bringing us their yearly cookie tray filled with cookies, M&M’s, and Hershey’s kisses. I remember being allowed on Christmas Eve to open just one gift, which was usually clothes to wear at Christmas services that evening. I remember the sound of the men unfolding those old wooden chairs at church when the pews were all full. I remember my brothers and sister teasing me about stealing my “special Christmas spot” the next morning……and I remember always being the first one awake only a few hours later and claiming that “special spot” which was located directly on top of the only heat vent in the living room. Most of all, I remember the first sight of all those gifts under the glistening tree and that magical feeling that I cannot begin to express with words.

Christmas brings so many memories, but do we stop to remember why we are celebrating? Do we remember baby Jesus making His arrival on that glorious day and claiming His “special spot” here on Earth? Do we remember why God sent Him to us and the sacrifices that He would later make for us? Do we remember that without Him, we are nothing? Do we remember to thank Him every day for the blessings we have received? If not, then there’s no better time to start than right now. And always remember that “Every good and perfect gift is from above.” James 1:17. Happy Birthday, Jesus!

Everyone Needs Hope by Theresa Zuber


For the past year or more we've heard a lot about "Hope." But still, there are so many who feel hopeless. Real hope cannot be found in any politician or plan. True hope can only be found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. He is always there, He keeps His promises & He will supply everything you need.

I don't pretend that I have it all together or that my life is a bed of roses because I'm a Christian. I mess up. I fall short. I have disasters in my life, too. But covering over all my sins - all my failures - is Jesus blood, His grace and His forgiveness.

I have hope because I know God has a plan for me - and for you! I have hope because I know there's more to life than what the world offers.

It started with a baby in a manger but it didn't end with his death on the cross. My Savior defied death and rose from the grave. His vitory over death gives me hope that there is MORE.

I pray that this Christmas season you will accept the gift of salvation and hope that Jesus purchased for you with his life. He's longing for you to belong to those He calls His own. If you'd like to find out more about this hope we have, we'd love to help you find it!

The Light of the World by Tana LeMay


1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." 9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. (Matthew 2: 1-2, 9-11)

I find the nighttime sky so amazing and so vast with all its stars. I could gaze at them for hours. There are so many. And yet, the Magi, or wise men, knew which single star to follow to find Jesus. It had to have been brighter and bigger than all the other stars in the sky at that time. The journey of the Magi took them a long time, many months, and the star remained before them, guiding their path. I wonder if the sky was ever covered by clouds, which obscured the star? Did they ever get lost on this journey and have to search for the star? Where is the star now? Did it disappear after the Magi found Jesus?

Fortunately, the miracle of the first Christmas is still with us. 9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. (John 1:9) That light is Jesus. The star the Magi followed is no longer needed, thanks to the gift of God’s son. He wants to be your guiding star. If you ask, He will provide hope and direction as you travel through this life’s journey. If you ask, He will shine His light on you and through you. That is my prayer for you. Merry Christmas!

Worship Spotlight 11 30 09 by Theresa Zuber


During this time of year when gift giving is on everyone's mind, let's take a little time to talk about giving as an act of worship. Typically, when it's time to give our tithes and offerings, we look to it as an act of obedience or perhaps obligation. Recently, I have looked at it as another act of worship.

Matt 2:11 On coming to the house, they (the Magi) saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

We are commanded to give a tithe to the church. Other passages refer to giving offerings over and above the tithe. This act of giving back to God is referred to as a pleasing sacrifice. Heb 13:16And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Have YOU thought about giving as an act of worship? Perhaps this Christmas you could send a one time, or monthly donation to the Oblong Christian Children's Home - a local home for foster children that instills Christian values and gives kids the security of home and family. Or perhaps you'd like to support a needy child through Haitian Christian Outreach or Compassion International. The church has connections with several mission groups if you need help finding a legitimate organization.

Want to do something in our own community? Our food pantry touches many lives and we always need donations of food and also workers to help pack and distribute these packages. Perhaps our office staff could connect you with a family that would be blessed by an anonymous gift from a brother or sister in Christ.

Think outside the gift box. Give with a cheerful heart as an act of worshiping our God and Savior. When you worship with all you have-- your voice, your hands, your heart, your time, your commitment, your wallet - God will bless your life in ways you would never expect.

Mal 3:10 "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.
Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

Worship Spotlight 11 16 09

After God parted the Red Sea and allowed the Israelite nation to escape from Pharaoh, the Israelite people celebrated. How did they show their joy and thankfulness? They sang a song to the Lord:

Exodus 15: 1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD : "I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea. 2 The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him.”

When was the last time that you were so thankful to God that you sang a song to Him? He has saved you from bondage – delivered you from the grips of Hell. We should celebrate that every day we are on this earth!

Col 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

I’m reminded of a chorus we sang years ago, “Give thanks with a grateful heart. Give thanks to the Holy One. Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ his Son.” Worshiping is about so much more than “singing songs.” Worship Him with a grateful heart – mindful of everything He has done for you!

Little Wonders by Susan Shull


The most wonderful thing about a child is….don’t get me started! Children are miracles in skin. I knew this for sure the minute we had our own three sons. As soon as I laid my eyes on each of them, I was head over heels, filled to the brim, and overflowing with love. I also became like a tiger-willing to do whatever it took to keep them safe.

Now with my grandchildren, I see even more what absolutely precious beings they are. I know how quickly they will grow up and how important, essential, vital, and necessary it is that they be taught the word of God. They are so trusting and eager to learn and so innocent.
Our children live in a world getting more evil and scarier by the moment, and its leader Satan wants them. He is relentless, will do whatever it takes to get them, and has many helpers. Christian parents cannot leave their children’s souls to chance. Their most important responsibility in being good parents is to teach their kids about the love of their Heavenly Father.

We would never purposefully put our dear, sweet children in a cage of wild animals to be devoured, but that is exactly what is done when people who know better, because they were taught the truth, don’t bring their precious babies to church to learn about the eternal protection offered through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Of course, this important task can’t just be left to the church. Parents must also teach the Bible at home through their own study, their own words, and their own actions. What could possibly be more important?

Unfortunately, we can’t make our children accept Christ’s love and free gift of salvation, but how can they possibly accept it if they are never taught? Please don’t leave your child’s soul to chance.

A Servant's Heart by Vaneta Andrews


I have been a part of several different clubs, organizations, and groups in my life. They all have one thing in common – a lack of workers! Even in the church it is sometimes hard to find workers. This however should not surprise me for God says “the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few” (Matthew 9:37) but God also says “And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in ALL His ways, to love Him, to SERVE the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” (Deut. 10:12 – emphasis mine)

So how do we serve the Lord our God? By serving others. There are a number of ways here at SACC … teach, prepare communion, help with food distribution/angel food, Wednesday Night Connect, nursery workers, praise team and the list goes on and on especially now that we have two services. If you want to serve just ask! There is always something that needs to be done for God’s Kingdom – both inside and outside the church walls.

Lord, Matthew 9:38 says to “ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into the harvest field” so I come to you now asking that you give me (and SACC) a servant’s heart for there are greater things still to be done here!

Shining Through by Joyce Scahfer


The other day I was watching TV and saw a singer being interviewed. He was wearing a T-shirt that read “Spiritual Gangster”. Wow! What a powerful message that sent to me. We put out messages to the rest of the world in everything we do-in the way we dress, the way we act, the way we walk and especially in what we say.

It is truly amazing the power of our actions. If it is a gloomy day try wearing bright colors and be amazed at how your mood and those around you improves. If someone is getting on your nerves try to give them a compliment. There is always something nice you can say to another of God's children. This will make them and you feel better. When you are sick or frightened by an unknown factor walk with confidence because you know God walks beside you or better yet ask him to walk in front of you.

Most of all we need to be very careful what we say. It really bothers me the filthy language that comes out of other people's mouths, but I am guilty of gossiping and complaining which are not too inspiring either. It helps me to think of my body as God's temple and remember Philippians 4:8.

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.”

FAMILY DEVOTIONS by Dena Wilkinson


My folks were adults when they accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior. It was the early ‘70’s and we lived in Brownstown, IL right next to the Christian church. They were baptized in the middle of the night by G. Robert Luse, the minister at the time. Although none of us kids witnessed this rebirth, we still got to experience godly parents at an early age. Mom and Dad were the kind of converts you read about in the New Testament – when they made the decision to follow Christ, there was no turning back. However, they didn’t miraculously become perfect people, but they didn’t stay as baby Christians, either. They were at church services every time the doors were opened and they got into the Word and studied it, praying and teaching us kids. As time went on, they eventually began family devotions and prayer time with us. We all were responsible for choosing a book from the Bible to study. Whosever turn it was would read a chapter out loud and then open it up for discussion. Dad had a few commentaries by then, so the individual responsible for that particular night was expected to do some study on their own before devotions that night.

One night it was my turn. By now I was in high school and had struggled with anemia for the better part of my life. As a result, I was tired the majority of the time and by 9:00 p.m., I was ready for bed. On this particular night, after reading the chapter and discussing it, I closed in prayer. I bowed my head and closed my eyes to begin my prayer. As I prayed aloud, my words started coming out slower and slower until they eventually stopped. In my subconscious mind, I knew I had stopped speaking out loud but was in that state of sleep where I could not do anything about it. Until suddenly, it hit my conscious mind that I was not talking out loud anymore! Thankfully, I recovered and continued on with my prayer, all the while feeling foolish. After the “Amen,” I raised my head to see my mom looking at me with her head cocked a bit and a twinkle in her eye. She gently asked, “Dena, did you fall asleep while you were praying?” Sheepishly, I admitted that I had. We all had a good laugh about it and I believe that is one prayer time I will never forget! I honestly don’t think God was insulted because He knew that years down the road, I would fall asleep many times in the middle of conversations not only with family members but with guests in our house!

Family devotions were a great time for bonding in our house and for learning how to read and spell. But even more importantly, we learned to love the Word and its Author. What better way to learn so much with one’s family and from just one Book!!

A soothing lullaby....so it would seem.
Nature's symphony performing for me

Worship Spotlight 10-19-09

David, who danced in the street in worship, is called “a man after God’s own heart.” This is the same David who was a shepherd boy that killed Goliath; he was a conqueror in battle and became King; he was also an adulterer and a murderer.

Psalms could be called the song book of the Bible. Although David didn’t write all of the psalms, many of them were written out of the events of David’s life. They run the gamut of praise, worship, adoration, frustration, fear, need, repentance, victory and hope. Reading and meditating on the Psalms is another way to prepare your heart and mind for worship – both personal worship and our corporate worship. Many of today’s songs are inspired by the Psalms.
Read and ponder on some of these and see if they inspire you to worship our God and King! Chapters 8, 24, 47, 63, 67, 84, 96, 100, 116, 139, 148 & 150.

Worship Spotlight 10 5 09


I praise God that His people use the Internet for His glory! A couple great websites that you should visit are http://www.tangle.com/ and http://www.youtube.com/ . These have many worship songs to moving PowerPoint’s presentations, live performances by various Christian artists, and even some sermons. Just go to these websites and search within their site for a certain artist or song. For instance, the video we showed a while back on Laminin is available for viewing on both youtube and tangle. Just put the word “Laminin” in the search box. Or perhaps you want to see the video of the little girl reciting the 23rd Psalm. Type in “Psalm 23 girl”. You can also search for videos of the Gaither vocal band, Big Daddy Weave, David Crowder, HIllsongs, even Elvis singing Amazing Grace! Or you can search by specific song titles. There are some clever spoofs on the Mac/PC commercials that cover different aspects of Christianity as well as some videos by Christian comedians like Mark Lowry, Chonda Pierce or Anita Renfroe to name a few.

As with all things, remember the warning we are given in 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 “21Test everything. Hold on to the good. 22 Avoid every kind of evil.” Test anything you see or hear against scripture so that you aren’t tripped up by false teachers! ”Garbage in, Garbage out” they say. So, if we spend time filling our hearts and minds with worship music, uplifting and educational books and videos, along with reading Holy Scripture…. We can expect that to have the opposite effect; perhaps…. “Goodness in, goodness out.” See you Sunday!

A Soft Place to Fall by Vaneta Andrews

We all NEED a “soft place to fall”. Some of us have favorite pillows, teddy bears, best friends, parents, or spouses that we go to when we just need a soft place to fall. Pillows wear out; teddy bears get old or we get too old for them (what a shame); best friends, parents and spouses aren’t always “soft”. However we all can experience the most reliable and faithful “soft place to fall” … God. He is ALWAYS there with unconditional love, acceptance and support. No matter what the outside world does to me, tells me or how it affects me – I can ALWAYS rest in the assurance that God is my soft place to fall and so can you!

Psalms 91:1 “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

Where Does Your Trust Lie? by Tana LeMay


What or who do you place your trust in? Many of us place our trust in family, careers, health, money, etc. Can we always count on them? Will they always be available to us?

The definition of trust is “a person on whom or thing on which one relies”. Still unsure of where your trust lies? One way to answer this question is to look at your lifestyle, at what drives you each and every day. What’s the foundation of your daily life?

I hope the answer is your relationship with Jesus. The bible tells us He will never leave us or forsake us. Jesus loves me and He loves you. He wants His best for you. Does that mean life will always be easy and carefree? We’ll all experience times of difficulty in our lives. We’ll have our struggles and days when it seems nothing is going our way. Even in the midst of darkness and pain, we can trust that Jesus is there, right beside us.

Some struggles are brought into our lives for a purpose. They are an opportunity to grow stronger in our faith; to further develop our character. These refining moments are best defined in 1 Peter 1:7, 7These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. If you have placed your trust in Jesus, 1 Peter 1:5 tells us that through faith you are shielded by God’s power.

If you are having trouble trusting God this week, spend some time in prayer and in His word. Memorize these scriptures below and carry them with you. When your trust falters, meditate on them and ask God to strengthen your faith.

Psalm 125:1 1 Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.

Psalm 9:10 10 Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.

Our Worst Enemy by Joyce Schafer


This fall I have watched a Cardinal battle his worst enemy. As I sat on my front porch, I watched this bird fly from a bush, take aim at his enemy in the window, attack, get knocked down, pick himself up and repeat this plan of action over and over again. This went on hour after hour and night after night.

My first reaction was "Boy, what a stupid bird!" Then I started thinking about all the times that I have been my own worst enemy. There have been plenty of times in my life when I have continued on a self-destructive path of eating too much junk food, not exercising, worrying about problems that were out of my control and working when I should have been resting.

As much as I would have liked to explain to this beautiful bird that the enemy in the window was himself, it was not possible. We are lucky. We have a wonderful Savior who can save us from our self-destructive paths. Sometimes it takes us a long time to learn and sometimes we learn the hard way. Usually after repeatedly doing things our way and failing, we finally ask God for help. Wouldn't it be so much easier if we would just ask God first?

Country Mouse and Proud of It! by Susan Shull


The most peaceful scene I can imagine is right out my door. However, I didn’t always feel that way. When I was in high school, I was one of those kids who knew I wouldn’t stay in Jasper County, and I certainly wasn’t going to marry a farmer. I was going to fall in love with a 9 to 5’er, live in a beautiful neighborhood, and have a nice mall within 15-20 minutes of my garage.
We did try that life for a while, but when we had Brady, both Brad and I knew we wanted to raise our kids in the country. Brad admitted that he had always really wanted to farm and be his own boss, so back to Hidalgo we came. It wasn’t easy, especially for Brad who worked two jobs for many, many, many years, but I am so glad we made the decision to leave the “city lights” and return to our very own Green Acres!
I love living in the country, where every morning I can enjoy beautiful sunrises and every evening I can be awed by my Creator with mind-boggling sunsets. Very early today, I looked out the window and couldn’t believe the size of the Big Dipper. Amazing.
Some people have accepted the lie of evolution, but I see proof of a loving Heavenly Father everywhere I look. I would give up living near a mall for that any day!

Change is a' Coming!! by Theresa Zuber


There’s something about the beauty of the changing seasons that brings hope and excitement: the leaves changing, the first snow, those bursts of spring color as the flowers begin to bloom, and those warm summer days when the sun warms your soul and everything is green and lush. The rain that falls after a dry spell, the sun that shines after a week of cloudy days. A first job after completing a college degree, a marriage filled with love and commitment to a long life together, a new baby with all its promise and possibility and unconditional love, and the ability to retire and enjoy some free time!

On October 18th we will begin an exciting time of change here at Scott Avenue when we offer two services each Sunday. Two opportunities to praise and worship God, each with its own “flavor”, blended and contemporary. Two new time slots for more flexibility, 8:00 & 10:30. Empty seats – each waiting for a lost soul! Let us look to this change with the hope and excitement and promise of what God can do when His people put their faith in HIS plan and HIS purpose! Change isn’t always negative…. Look to the positives!

The Color of Creation by Dena Wilkinson


Father, today I want to thank you for your creative power and the wide array of colors You bring into play to give us variety every day. The relaxing hues of varied green tones blend in harmony with each other, as the blues and grays of the sky lend their complementary notes. Spring brings a riotous sample of pastels, including lavender, pink and pale yellow of the crocuses, daffodils and tulips, reminding us that just as these bulbs rise each year, Your Son arose after only three days in the ground!

As spring blends into summer, we see a burst of primary colors arriving to brighten each day as the perennials come to life and the annuals take root and flourish. Across the Midwest, row after row of corn and beans begin to make their appearance, covering the earth with their strong green shades. To the Christian, the upcoming harvest of these crops reminds us of spreading Your word to those who haven’t heard it yet.

When autumn lazily interrupts summer, the colors deepen into rust tones and deep golds with an occasional burnt sienna thrown in for good measure. The fire bush reminds us of Moses’ encounter with You when he argued that he could not do what You asked of him. Yet, You were with him every step of the way. Ironically, the mum is not quiet about its beauty as if to tell us that no matter what our station in life, if You are in control of us, we can do all things with the strength that You give.

Even as You create the winter months, the stark white of the snow does not hide the beautiful pine trees and the red branches of an occasional bush seen here and there. You encourage us in Your scriptures to view the snow’s purity as a symbol of becoming a Christian. As if that isn’t enough for our sense of sight, You amazingly created the beautiful male Cardinal with his triumphant coat of red. Even the female looks attractive in her soft gray covering and muted colors.

You are so good to us! Everywhere we look, we can see Your power and goodness in all that You spoke into existence. You are truly a God of wonder!!

Like a Two-Year-Old by Joyce Schafer


Recently we went to Holiday World. Since I am not a "ride person" I hung out with our two-year-old granddaughter. She needed someone to hold her hand to keep her on the right path, pick her up when she fell down and carry her when she was worn out. I realized how much like a two-year-old I am in God's eyes.
He is always trying to keep me on the right path but sometimes like a two-year-old I can be stubborn and want to go in another direction. I am constantly stumbling and falling down but he is always there to pick me up, dust me off, and get me back on my feet. When I am weary and cannot go any farther, he carries me and comforts me.
God, I pray that you will help me to outgrow my stubborn two-year-old tendencies. I need to trust in you completely. Only then will I achieve my goal of becoming a mature Christian.

Freedom to Hope by Tana LeMay


One of this week’s devotionals was centered on Galatians 5:1: It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
What has God given me the freedom to do? He has given me the freedom to live in hope.
I’m not talking about an unrealistic hope that life will always be well and good. We live in a fallen world where pain and sorrow is a part of living. We’ll all experience it during parts of our lifetime. The hope I’m talking about is the hope that comes when we walk with Jesus; the faith of knowing he is in control. I can walk in the assurance of my future in God’s hands. And when I fall, which happens nearly every day, Jesus is there to help me up, to wipe the dirt away and to get my feet moving again. When the valley is deep and dark, he’s there beside me, holding my hand and encouraging me to keep walking.

I came across the following in a novel by Brock and Bodie Thoene, “The answer is that you must simply keep living. Embrace whatever God sends your way. Sorrow and joy. Trust that you are not here by accident. Every moment, every event in your life has a purpose for the welfare of eternity if you love God.”

We will never forget the victims of nine-one-one.

And many brave souls at Ground Zero...
Firefighters and policemen gave up their lives.

Now, all alone are their families and wives.

A day that began the future for a newlywed,

Sonia will no longer twirl and dance...

Little Juliana and Dana will never get the chance.

Luke 6:45 “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.”

This passage applies to our worship as well! Our corporate worship should be an overflow of our personal worship. A tool that can help is worshiping with Christian music throughout your week. But if you are unfamiliar with Christian artists, it’s a difficult decision when purchasing a CD. If you have Dish Network, listen to Channel 975 “The Light” for a variety of Christian artists. The worship team will periodically give suggestions that contain powerful, contemporary music that will help you worship Him through song. This week’s suggestion: Chris Tomlin’s newest release “Hello Love” includes “God of this City” which we introduced two weeks ago!

Learning to Trust God in All Things by Joyce Schafer

After spending the last few weeks cleaning, painting walls and finishing floors I have come to a few conclusions. First of all I am definitely not as young as I think I am. I used muscles that had been dormant for a long time.

Secondly, how great it is to have family and friends that will help you. Our kids were great helping to tear up carpet, sand floors and moving the heavy items. Our grandsons helped us tear out the old brush and our granddaughters helped us put in the new flowers and trees. Plus everyone made lots of trips back and forth carrying things from the old place to the our new home. My brothers who just live down the road from us now were in daily to check on us to see if we needed anything and our church friends prayed us through all of it-the closing of this house, the renovation and the selling of our place in town.

After the hard work was done it was time to celebrate with a party. It was so nice to see our former neighbors and our new neighbors, our relatives on both side of the family and our friends all coming together to share in our happiness at being back in the country. Once again our kids and grandkids pitched in with the cleaning and cooking. We are truly blessed.

The most important thing I learned through all of this is if you put everything in God's hands he will take care of you. This happens in his time not my time. I am an impatient, Type A personality that expects instant results to all my problems and goals. If I pray about it in the morning by nightfall I should see results. I am working on this and it has been one of my personal goals for the year. I need to keep reminding myself to pray and trust that God will answer my prayers in his way and in his time.

One of my favorite verses in the bible is James. I always feel like he is speaking directly to me. James 1:2-6 reads: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. but when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind."

Are you Hungry? by Theresa Zuber

I recently read this line in a prayer “Give me a hunger to get into Your word and let Your word get into me.” Although I know that I need to be in His Word daily, I forget that I can pray for him to help me have that hunger. It seems silly, but life gets SO busy – so filled with commitments, activities, work, etc. It’s easy to forget what should be my priority. Yet somehow, I never forget to eat 3 meals a day. My hunger tells me it’s time. Am I ignoring the hunger pangs for time his Word? Am I noticing the “deficiency” when my steady diet is missing such a necessary ingredient?

I’ve recently been trying to memorize scripture. I’m convinced that hiding His word in our hearts is important. However, I’m coming to the conclusion that these “snacks” from the Bible are not enough to sustain me! They are an anchor in a storm, a guide for my life, a comfort and a hope, but they can’t be my steady diet. I hope that you will join me in praying that God will give me a hunger to get into His Word and that His word will get into me!

His eyes that watch over deep blue sea,

...Neatest old guy I know.
Each time I want to be heard,
He listens to my every word.
Playing ball out in the yard,
Cheering loud, when I hit it hard.
Chasing me around each base,
My Hero puts the "happy" on my face.
I love playing games with him
...He always lets me win !
It's baseball, football and volleyball...
We practice, play and watch it all !
Takes me to see the Eagles play,
It's a Gage and Grandpa day !!
He saddles up the old brown mare,
Sets me in the saddle ...with "Hero" care.
Out on the prairie, playing Wild West,
My Hero is the very best !
Answering my questions...one and all,
...There to catch me...if I stumble and fall.
When it's time for a snack and a little T.V.
My Hero watches Sponge Bob with me !
...Grandpa always has time for me.
....A Hero, he will always be !

Growing up...I loved a day at the fair,
Could hardly wait to get there !!
To 13 County Fairs we would go
Competing for prizes in each garden show
Vegetables...a plate of five
...For perfection we would strive.
Big tomatoes, juicy and red...
And cabbage...one perfect head.
Carrots, orange and straight,
For judging results, we could hardly wait.
Onions...red, yellow and white
And the county's largest pumpkin...What a sight !!
Small zucchini...tender and green
Plates filled with every kind of lima and bean.
Vegetables arranged in a basket display
A work of art...when Mom had her way !!
Ribbons awarded in red, white and blue
Grand champion trophies and prizes money too.
Hard work, good friends and competition
The County Fair, filled with anticipation.
When the veggie show was done...
It was time for me to have some fun...
Carnival rides, games and saltwater taffy
Everything to make a child happy
Excitement and noise of a carnival midway
Thrills and rides and games to play
Bells and buzzers, horns and lights
Little ones thrilled with sounds and sights.
Music pouring from a Merry-Go- Round
Laughter filled the skies with happy sound
The smell of cotton candy in the air
What wonderous delights at the County Fair !
Bumper cars and Tilt-O-Whirl
Thrills for each boy and girl.
The Ferris Wheel jolts to a sudden stop
And you find yourself...stuck on top !
Venders selling their wears
Toys, ballons and Teddy bears.
Harness racing...horses strong and fast
Trotting hard so they won't be last.
Wooly sheep, continually bleeting,
Clean, fat pigs ...curled up sleeping
Holstien cows mooing low,
All cleaned up for tomorrow's show
Families enjoying the day together
Making memories to last forever.
Thanking God, when day was done
For blessings, joys and simple fun.

On The Road Again by Tana LeMay


My favorite season is spring-summer-fall. Anything except winter. If I must pick one favorite of all, it would be summer. Most of my memories center on that season, like a song that takes you back to a particular moment in time.

What I most look forward to each summer is our vacation. Those of you who know me know of my love of travel. Going to new places is so much fun. We rarely fly; always drive. Most people groan and ask why. Yes, it takes longer, but you get to see so much on the way. You drive through little towns with strange names; come upon festivals in full swing; eat at restaurants you never knew existed. And, there’s all that scenery. Yes, some stretches of road are flat and boring, but there are always areas that are hilly and pretty. I’ve probably been to more than half of the states in this great country, but there is still a lot I want to see.

Growing up, we always took a trip to somewhere each summer. Colorado, Florida, Gettysburg, Boston, Lake of the Ozarks, Wisconsin, South Carolina….. I have a lot of memories from those trips. Curtis and I try to take our family somewhere each summer, hoping they’ll store up their own special memories.

Recently, my ABF class was talking about a trip some of them took to the Smoky Mountains. We went there 3 or 4 times. It too is an area with a lot to see and do. Dad was always fascinated with the bears. He liked to pull over and feed them. One time a bear practically crawled onto our car. Not on Dad’s side, but the passenger side. He handed my stepmother a piece of bread and told her to roll down the window and give it to the bear. “Are you crazy?, she asked. On that same trip, driving up to Clingman’s Dome, traffic came to a stop on the highway. People were getting out of their cars because a mother bear and 2 cubs were sitting alongside the road. Dad, Bridgett and I walked up for a closer look. A crowd had encircled the 3 bears. One child got too close and the mama bear took a swipe at him, fortunately not touching him. People screamed and took off running. Bridgett and I were at the front of the pack and made it back to our car in no time. Unfortunately Dad didn’t know we took off. He turned around and we were gone. He was not happy with us when he got back to the car as he had been looking for us, thinking we had rolled down the hill or were grabbed by the bears. We still talk about that trip.

If you have time, grab your family, pack up the car and hit the road for a few days. There’s a lot to see in this great land God has blessed us with. Make your own summer vacation memories.

Summertime...and the Reading is Easy by Susan Shull


When I am stressed, watch-out if I am anywhere books are sold. I will look and look and buy several. I might also stop at the library and go straight to the new book shelves-the ones you have to pay 25 cents a week to read- grabbing at least two. I do all of this knowing I don’t have the time to read these little treasures. It doesn’t matter. I become an obsessed woman searching for a feeling-a feeling of escape, a feeling of comfort, a feeling of SUMMERTIME. Knowing I have good books stacked up waiting to be read makes me feel more peaceful. Am I weird or do other people feel the same way?
During my 90 day weekend, I enjoy opening the latest offerings of my favorite authors and becoming totally immersed in the characters and settings being described. I forget all about my worries and completely relax.
I know in our world we have many distractions and ways to be passively and actively entertained. I’m sure many of the students in whom I have tried to foster a love of reading during the school year will not pick up a single book during June, July, and August. Some will even brag about it. These comments make me really, really, really sad. When I hear adults say similar things, it makes me sick. Reading is a skill that needs to be practiced and parents who never read probably don’t realize it. What kind of reader will their children turn out to be?
I’m not upset that the kids might not read the latest Newbury or Caldecott winners or even that they might not read and enjoy a classic book for their age group. I am upset that if they do not practice reading, these children, who will soon become adults responsible for spreading the truth of God’s love, may not learn to read and comprehend and think well enough to love reading their Bible. We live in scary times when many people are obsessed with being “spiritual”. Satan is working overtime trying to take the place of God in our lives. If we don’t want to be deceived by the crazy, false philosophies being presented all around us, we and our children must know what God’s word says. We can’t depend on what the preacher on TV says, what our own preachers say (sorry Mark and Andy!) or even what our parents tell us. Each of us has to dig into the Bible and learn for ourselves what God teaches in his love letter to us.

II Timothy 2:15 says…
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

If we are going to “correctly handle the word of truth,” we are going to have to study it for ourselves. The first settlers of our country wanted their children to get an education so that they could study the scriptures. Perhaps not many in education today would claim that as a primary goal, but many Christian educators do. As Christian parents, I hope that is your goal too. Please don’t let another day go by without encouraging your kids to pick up a book and get engrossed in the pages. Set a good example for them by modeling the importance of reading, reading not only secular material, but most importantly your Bible. If they see you read, they are more likely to value books.Don’t just encourage your child to be a good athlete. Encourage him to be a good reader

God's Amazing Creativity by Theresa Zuber


God’s creativity continually amazes me. It was apparent to me once again as I gazed across the bottom ground after dark and saw a multitude of lightning bugs flashing. God’s glitter on a beautiful summer evening for us to share with our two-year-old granddaughter.

Glittering lightning bugs on a summer night.
Rainbows of flowers in yards and along country roads.
The sing-song of a variety of birds on a early morning.
Who but God could direct this choir and arrange the harmonies?!
Shape-shifting mounds of fluffy cotton in the sky
That change from a baby to a rabbit.
Wind that can gently carress you and
Wind that chases you as you run for cover.
Spindly-legged colts that stand shortly after birth.
Butterflies with stained-glass wings doing a ballet
As the float from one bloom to another.
Trees bloom, fruit forms, And God turns garden seed into edible blessings.
In the summer, green is greener and blue is bluer.
What a WONDER You are, oh God!

Mission: Assimilation (Week 4) by Theresa Zuber


Hebrews 3:13 says we are to “… encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness.” Jesus’ life was spent spurring others on to be better, to be more, to become all God designed them to be. Look at his encounters with Zacchaeus, Matthew the tax collector, the woman caught in adultery, and Peter, just to name a few.

Having Christian friends and the support of a church family is vital as we grow in our walk with God. Not only is it an encouragement when times are hard or perhaps disheartening, but it also gives us accountability when straying from the straight and narrow.

Following Jesus’ example, we must commit to regular church attendance. 16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. (Luke 4:14) “as was his custom” Jesus went to church regularly and so should we. We can’t stay connected with people we don’t spend time with. Also, we need to participate in worshipping together, communion and hearing the Word preached/taught.

Hebrews 10:25 “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” You see, even in the first century “42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Acts 2:42 While driving, taking your eyes off the road for a few seconds can allow you to drift into the oncoming traffic. We need this encouragement to stay on course.

But this isn’t just a Sunday commitment. Remember the words of Joshua 24:14-15 14 "Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” I try to remember to place emphasis on THIS day, since daily I have to choose.

Whom will I serve today? Myself? Money or work? My hobbies? Sports? TV shows? The internet? (I don’t know about you, but this hits close to home for me!) Or today, will I choose to serve the Most High God? Will I choose to serve His people in His name?

3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)

I want to encourage YOU today to stay committed to God, to His people - your Christian brothers and sisters, to completing the race. “24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” (1 Corinthians 9:24) I pray that these scriptures will fill your heart with a desire to be steadfast for the entire race. When you become discouraged or tired and want to step back – remember to choose daily to serve the only true God – Jehovah!

Mission: Assimilation (Week 3) by Theresa Zuber


Now that we’ve (hopefully) gotten into the habit of focusing on some “power” verses that can help us in our day to day struggles, we are going to focus this week on prayer. Again, using Jesus as our example, the book of Luke 5:16 tells us “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Don’t think of “lonely” as a sad place. Think of it as a quiet retreat where there are no other distractions; a place that would allow someone to “Be still, and know that I am God;” (Psalm 46:10a)

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
says we are to “16 Be joyful always; 17pray continually; 18give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” Wow. Pray continually? The King James Version says “Pray without ceasing.” Another version, the NIRV says it this way, “Never stop praying.” How are we to pray continually? We have to work, right? And shower, cook, pay bills, do laundry. But while doing all these things we can be in a constant state of communication with God! Talk to him about what’s bugging you at work. Pray for your children while you’re sorting their socks. Ask for help with your finances as you balance your checkbook. God wants to be a part of EVERYTHING!

Just be certain that your prayers are genuine and not just meaningless babble. 5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” Matthew 6:5-8 (Don’t panic… I know it’s a long passage. If it’s too much just memorize verse 7 or the one that speaks to you.)

God isn’t concerned with our format or our fancy words. God is concerned with our hearts, our intentions, and our sincerity. “16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” James 5:16

There are many, many verses that guide us as we try to follow the scriptural instructions on prayer. This week as you study these verses, begin to “pray continually” not just at meal times or when a crisis arises. "6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

Are you curious what Jesus’ prayers would have been like? Take a little time to read his prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane in John 17. He prays for himself, his disciples and then for all believers. If you believe in Jesus Christ, that’s you and me! Continue to refresh yourself on the previous weeks’ verses. If God’s word is truly going to be a lamp to our feet and light to our path then we have to make sure we pick up the lamp and hold it out to shine the way - every day. Pray for one another this week and take some time to be still and know that He is God.

Grow Up by Julie Short


When I was a child I acted like a child, unfortunately I still find myself at 49 acting like a child at times. I want to grow in my spiritual walk with God so, I need to put away childish ways. (I Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man I put childish ways behind me.)

I still can laugh and enjoy life, I just need to stop having tantrums and fits. A 49 year old having a 3 year old's tantrum, isn’t pretty and it doesn’t glorify God. I have spent a lot of time crossing my arms, sticking out my lower lip, crying and stomping my feet yelling, "I can’t , it’s too hard" or "I don’t want to do what I know is right."

My job is to observe children and their environments. I often think that if the adult just saw how they were interacting with the child (through the use of a video camera) no words would be needed they would simply stop.

I often act childish when I’m out in public with my husband. Well, by public I am referring to taking a walk and complaining the entire time about this or that. Then I remember “you may be the only bible someone reads” Ouch! Will they see a 49 year old proclaiming to be a Christian and acting like a spoiled 3 year old, or will they see a woman who is walking in love, full of self control and gentleness?

I praise God and thank Him for being a merciful God, but that does not mean I need to continue in my sin. (I John 5:18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin…) It means I need to make a strong, determined effort wrapped in constant prayer to be a vessel that God can use to show His love. Anything good in me comes from God. In my weakness I am a mess. When I stop acting like a child, God can do amazing things through me.

Mission: Assimilation (Week 2) by Theresa Zuber


This past week, we’ve focused on scriptures that remind us that God’s word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Hopefully, we have hidden that scripture in our hearts and have begun to make these words a part of who we are. If you have a difficult time with memorization, just read the passages every morning and night. They will become familiar.

This week we are going to focus on some “positive thinking” scriptures. We talked last week about how Jesus stopped Satan’s attack by quoting scriptures. One of Satan’s favorite tactics is belittling us. He whispers, “You aren’t good enough.” “You don’t matter.” Whatever dark lies Satan is whispering to you this week, expose them to the light of God’s truth.

God designed you. He shaped your nose and ears just the way he wanted. God doesn’t make mistakes and God doesn’t make junk. Psalm 139:13-14 tells us “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Not only did he choose your sex and your hair color but “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” (Luke 12:7)

Our heavenly Father chose the character traits that made that special mix of “you!” Perhaps you can sing, perhaps you can’t carry a tune in a bucket! You may be a leader or a follower, quiet spirited or fun-loving. These things are not by chance. God created all of who you are. God wants you to use who you are for His purposes. “For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)

You see, God has a plan for you and his plan is bigger and better than any you could imagine for yourself! He knows what you are capable of and he also knows the desires of your heart! “For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Why would the Almighty God have plans for YOU? It’s because he loves you. " The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing." (Zephaniah 3:17)

Don’t fall for all that negative talk! You are a child of God, created just as he designed you. He loves you with an everlasting love and nothing can take that away from you! “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

Answered Prayer by Donna (Ensign) Woods


I want to celebrate answered prayer with you.
Once again, God's awesome love comes shining through !!
So very thankful He heard our heartfelt plea.
And for allowing us, His great mercy to see.
We sing praises of joy, with glorious song.
Our hearts dance in celebration all day long.
Fervent prayer avails so very much...
It empowers the Master's wondrous touch.
It's so awesome, to hear Him say "Yes"
I always stand in amazement, I must confess.
There's joyful excitement, when He wipes away pain.
Faith is energized, and prayerful we shall remain.
Even if God's answer had been,"No"...
Or if His answer had been agonizing and slow...
Whatever His plan reveals, we can rest assured,
That His grace accompanies all that is to be endured.
Answers to prayer....great and small...
Our Father in Heaven sends them all !!!

Mission: Assimilation by Theresa Zuber


“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 199:11)

If someone were to ask me to memorize scripture, I would immediately think, “Oh, no! That sounds boring and I don’t think I could do it.” But, before you discount the thought, bear with me for a moment or two.

I purposely titled this Mission: Assimilation because that is what the goal is. Encarta Dictionary defines assimilation as “the process of becoming part of or more like something greater”. Now I like the sound of that. We want to assimilate the information, the scriptures, until God’s word becomes a part of us. Don’t we all want to become more like Jesus?

When Jesus faced Satan’s temptation in the desert, what did he do? He used scripture to refute Satan’s lies. He didn’t have a concordance, or a search engine like biblegateway.com (both of which I love and use regularly!) Jesus referred back to the teachings he had learned as a child in Jewish temple, the studies that he had done with his family, and the scriptures that he knew from heart.

We can’t always have our Bible handy but if we hide God’s word in our hearts, then “out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 5:45b) As we move from an infant Christian to a more mature Christian, God’s word must become a part of who we are. Sermons, small group studies, devotions will feed us as we grow, but we also need to commit to personal study, Bible reading and meditation as well. We don’t want to be like the Hebrew people who were scolded, “In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!” (Hebrews 5:12)

As we study and commit to memory these precious words, I pray that “the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (John 14:26)

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,” (2 Tim 3:16)

“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

Spend this week studying these passages and committing them to memory. Assimilate them into your heart and mind, so that you can draw on them when needed. May the living, breathing Word of God be a lamp for your feet and light for your path!

A Mother's Heart by Tana LeMay


In Luke chapter 2, there are two references to Mary storing up treasures of Jesus in her heart:
2:19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
2:51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart
.

As mothers, how often do we to hold within our hearts the precious memories of our children’s years with us? The days pass so quickly from birth to the empty nest. When they are young and require so much of our time and energy, it seems as if they’ll be with us forever. But I have learned that those days pass in the blink of an eye.

I was never disciplined enough to write down the things they said (out of the mouth of babes) or the silly games they would invent. But I have the snapshots of those moments and much more stored within my memory and heart. Those times when I said to myself “I want to remember this forever”. Some of these memories are of good, pleasant things, but some are also of difficult situations. Those times when I knew they would eventually learn from the event, no matter how painful.

It won’t be long before my husband and I become empty nesters. I look forward to those days with some expectation and also with some despair. The house will be quieter (and cleaner). The calendar will have more empty spaces than ever before. The memories will be sweeter. But this next chapter of our lives and theirs will also be an opportunity to store up more memories. Memories of graduations, new careers and homes, and maybe even weddings and babies. And so, the circle continues.
